Fungal Infection
Commonly known as ringworm , a fungal infection is seen as itchy red scaly rings-like lesions. They are most likely to occur in areas that are sweaty and not well aerated. It’s only mildly contagious. It can spread from person to person through direct contact or indirectly through objects with the fungus on them.
COMMON SITES INCLUDE
- Groin
- Buttocks
- Armpits
- Under your breasts
- Between toes
The infection usually starts from these areas but can occur anywhere on the body including face, back, arms or legs.
It is best to visit a dermatologist as soon as you notice such a patch anywhere on your body instead of self medicating with over-the-counter creams, as such creams often contain steroids which will only lead to temporary relief of symptoms without curing the infection.
TREATMENT
Treatment includes various oral antifungals, along with antifungal creams/lotions and antihistamines to relieve itching.
It is important that the patient observe the following precautions as well
- keep skin dry and sweat free
- wash your clothes separately so as to not spread the infection to other family members.
- Do not share personal items such as towels etc.
