Lichen Planus

Lichen planus is an inflammatory skin condition, triggered by the immune system. It is a non-infectious disease consisting of itchy, small, many-sided, flat-topped, pink or purple bumps.

Some of the most common symptoms of lichen planus include the following:

  • purplish-colored lesions or bumps with flat tops on your skin or genitals
  • lesions that develop and spread over the body over the course of several weeks or a few months
  • itching at the site of the rash
  • lacy-white lesions in the mouth, which may be painful or cause a burning sensation
  • blisters, which burst and become scabby
  • thin white lines over the rash

Lichen planus can affect not just your skin, but sometimes your genitals, oral mucosa, and nails as well. It needs to be diagnosed and treated by a trained dermatologist.

TREATMENT

Being a chronic disease, the treatment of lichen planus may be prolonged. Mild disease may resolve in a few weeks to months with the right medication.
